Review By Patrick Lee

SUMMARY
Blade the vampire hunter (Snipes), picking up where he left off, is stalking bloodsuckers with brutal efficiency. He has tracked his old mentor, Whistler (Kristofferson), to Prague, where vampires have taken his lifeless corpse for reasons unknown. Finding Whistler unconscious in a vat of blood, Blade releases him and momentarily contemplates staking the now undead old man.

But he thinks better of it. He takes Whistler back to his workshop lair and his new partner, a street kid named Scud (Norman Reedus). Blade administers a quick-fix serum to counteract the vampire virus infecting Whistler. But before they know it, they are set upon by intruders.

Two ninja-like warrior vampires engage Blade in a fierce sword battle. They stop just as the duel gets lethal and reveal themselves as messengers, sent to recruit Blade for a campaign to save humans and the undead alike.

The warriors, it turns out, are Nyssa (Varela) and the Bloodpack, an elite guard of the vampire world. Originally created to hunt down Blade, they now find themselves with a more perilous task. A new strain of powerful and ruthless vampire has emerged—a Reaper, described as a "crack addict" with a thirst for blood and no regard for vampire or human life. If they cannot be stopped, they will infect others and overrun the world.

The vampire emperor, Damaskinos (Thomas Kretschmann), proposes a truce so that Blade may join forces with the Bloodpack to eliminate the Reapers.

Such a truce does not come easily, especially given the hatred between Blade and Reinhardt (Perlman), the leader of the vamp pack. Partnered in uneasy alliance, the sword-wielding Daywalker and his pale companions nevertheless discover that they must work together or face horrible transfiguration in the jaws of Nomak (Luke Goss) and the nearly indestructible Reaper horde.

REVIEW
Blade II is the follow-up to 1998's surprise hit film, based on the Marvel Comics series Blade the Vampire Hunter. It teams the original star and writer with a new director, the stylish helmer of Cronos and Mimic.

The sequel takes the original film's attractions and ramps them up several notches. Chief among these are the accomplished fight scenes, combining computer-assisted Matrix-y wire acrobatics, kung fu and sword duels that would put a Jedi to shame. Aficionados of Mexican director del Toro also will recognize the fluid and confident camera movement, lurid compositions and graphic gore and violence. His camera often follows the action in impossible ways, tracking Blade as he leaps off a tall building, flips in midair and lands catlike on the balls of his feet. An early corrido del toros sequence—sword and cape versus motorcycle-bound vampires—puts a similar Mission: Impossible 2 stunt to shame.

Blade II, photographed by Aria's Mexican-born cinematographer Gabriel Beristain, also has a burnished quality—deep shadows, firelight and stone contrasted with blue steel, glass and neon.

But like Snipes' titular hero, the movie is all slick moves and attitude, but doesn't say a lot. Where the first movie plumbed the depths of Blade's conflicting passions, this film gives lip service to the topic, but mostly dispenses with anything thoughtful in favor of ever-escalating action. The sequel also squanders the chance to examine Blade's conflicted feelings about teaming up with his mortal enemies, or their mix of admiration and dread for the Daywalker.

Where the first film was cut with Grand-Guignol energy and humor, this film winds up feeling frenetic and noisy. Fight scenes collide one upon without pause, like corpses falling into a sewer, growing in brutality until all but the hardiest viewer will find himself grimacing. And then del Toro takes it even farther, offering a gruesome Reaper autopsy here, a twitching severed head there.

I concur completely. When I read this, I decided that anything I'd have to say wouldn't put it as well as Patrick Lee, so why try to paraphrase? My only additional comment is while I enjoyed the film as interesting, it didn't do much for me intellectually. Too many little things didn't make sense. The vamp girl in the Bloodpack was too stupid to flip the little light open and save herself? And the jumble of images made the action a bit too hard to follow. The effect was good, but there was just a little too much of it. Much of the gore had no basis and seemed to be added in to draw gore fans into shelling out the $7. Pointless gore is a waste of screen time. Good fluff to a point. Would I watch it again? Not if I had the first one on hand. ~ Marrah

Snipes Had Yen For Blade II

Wesley Snipes—who reprises his role as the title character in the upcoming SF sequel Blade II—told SCI FI Wire that he brought in Hong Kong martial arts star Donnie Yen as fight choreographer to infuse the film's action scenes with a mixture of styles. "We [brought] Donnie Yen in [to] give us a little bit of that Hong Kong flavor, like you see in some of the opening scenes," Snipes said in an interview. "And then [we] move from there into more of the Wesley Bronx/Brooklyn style stuff as the film progresses, and he gets a little more emotional. ... I threw everything in there. The criteria was that it had to make sense and be in sync with the emotional state of the character at the time, and that it just couldn't be there for the sake of being there."

Yen was also cast in the on-screen role of Snowman, a member of the "Bloodpack"—an elite unit of vampires originally brought together to hunt Blade. When a threat to vampires and humans alike appears, the Bloodpack finds itself aligned with its former enemy. "We didn't get a chance to use him in the fullest capacity that we would've liked to because of the character he played," Snipes said of Yen. "But we appreciated him. He helped very much in that opening sequence. They actually laid all that out, and I came and added the whole Blade energy to it."

As in the first movie, Snipes was very much involved in the creative as well as the physical aspect of the fight scenes in Blade II. "We just wanted it to be creative," he said. "[I] trained in a lot of martial arts styles, worked with a lot of different and good martial artists. So we thought, well, since Blade is already a kind of hybrid type of a film, mixing genres, mixing styles, mixing music genres, why don't we mix the martial arts styles as well?" Blade II opened March 22.

Goyer Mulls Blade III

Blade II screenwriter David Goyer told the Comics2Film Web site that he is already talking about a third installment in the vampire film franchise, even though the sequel hasn't hit theaters yet. "I've always had in mind an idea for the third one that takes it into really uncharted territory, and I'm curious to see if New Line will go for it or not," Goyer told the site.

Goyer added, "What I really want to do for the third one is set it about 20 years in the future, and the vampires have actually completely taken over the world, so they are the status quo. Because Blade is actually half-vampire, he ages at a slower rate, so Wesley [Snipes] can still play himself."

Goyer also wants to shake up vampire mythology. "In all these different stories, the vampires are trying to take over the world," he said. "For the third film, I just want to say, 'F-ck it. They've won. Now what is the world like?'" Blade II open[ed] March 22.

Shaye Open To Blade III

New Line co-chairman Bob Shaye told SCI FI Wire he is open to making Blade III if a reasonable budget can be devised. Writer David Goyer has been talking about an idea where the vampires have taken over the Earth, and upon hearing that idea for the first time, Shaye responded positively.

"It's interesting," Shaye said in an interview. "I'll have to call him about it. He hasn't presented it to me yet, so I don't know. I don't have any foregone conclusions. I don't think this is light material anyway, but I think it's great page-turning comic-book material. David is a good writer."

Shaye is interested in making a third Blade film, but likens the necessary deal to the opposite of his studio's popular fantasy trilogy. "It's the flip side of the three Lord of the Rings stories," Shaye said. "Although there's still more money to be spent to realize the second and third chapters, they're basically in the can. [For the Blade series], we're working on getting our deals in place. But if we can, we'll go ahead with Blade III."

Rice Blesses Damned

Rose Saralegui, who produced the current vampire thriller film Queen of the Damned, told SCI FI Wire that Anne Rice, on whose novels the film is based, gave the filmmakers permission to use her name only at the 11th hour. "She ... cleared the use of her name. Which you probably see now in the materials," Saralegui said in an interview. "Now it's Anne Rice's Queen of the Damned. That was her offering it to us after seeing the movie, so that kind of speaks for itself."

Director Michael Rymer said in an interview that Rice was involved in the production from the start, but distanced herself after a disagreement with Warner Brothers executives. "Anne was there at the beginning," Rymer said. "I met with her, and we talked about the style and the sort of casting we were going to do. Anne and the studio parted ways about which book to do. She, I think, would have preferred [to adapt only] the second book [Queen of the Damned] if it had gone forward. But then she was copied on all the screenplays. She gave comments and has pretty much given us her blessing."

Seeking Rice's approval, Rymer flew out to New Orleans to personally screen the finished film for the author. Her response? "Very positive," Rymer said. "She was very objective. She knew that it wasn't going to be the books. She was prepared to evaluate the film on its own merits. ... I can't quote her, but she's put some quotes on her Web site that are very flattering. So I'm greatly relieved." Queen of the Damned is now playing.

Arnold Won't Star In Legend

Arnold Schwarzenegger won't star in the proposed post-apocalyptic SF movie I Am Legend, but will act as producer, Variety reported. Instead, Warner Brothers is now talking with Will Smith to star and Michael Bay to direct, the trade paper reported. The movie, based on Richard Matheson's classic SF novel, is reportedly on a fast track.

Earlier reports had Ridley Scott directing Legend. Mark Protosevich (The Cell) wrote the script. The Matheson book pits the last man on Earth against nocturnal mutants in post-plague Los Angeles. The book was previously adapted for the big screen as The Last Man on Earth and The Omega Man.

Underworld Emerges

Screen Gems has picked up North American distribution rights to the supernatural action/horror film Underworld from Lakeshore Entertainment, Variety reported. Danny McBride and Len Wiseman wrote the film, which marks music video director Wiseman's feature helming debut, the trade paper reported.

The movie is a Romeo and Juliet story with the undead in starring roles, dealing with forbidden love against the backdrop of an ancient war between vampires and werewolves. Underworld is slated to start filming in August, with casting to begin shortly.

Sommers Bites Into Van Helsing

Writer/director Stephen Sommers (The Mummy) will take on Dracula in Van Helsing, a supernatural feature film set to begin shooting in early fall, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Sommers will also produce Van Helsing with his partner Bob Ducsay, the trade paper reported.

Sommers' screenplay is set in the late 19th century and finds Bram Stoker's monster hunter Van Helsing summoned to a distant Eastern European land to vanquish evil. The project will make use of Universal's classic monster characters, including Dracula, Frankenstein and the Wolf Man, as reimagined by Sommers, the trade paper reported.

'Vampire Rapist' Commits Suicide
Tue Apr 2,11:21 AM ET

MIAMI (Reuters) - A prisoner dubbed the "vampire rapist" for drinking his victim's blood committed suicide at a Florida prison where he was serving a life term, corrections officials said on Tuesday.

Guards at the Hardee Correctional Institute in central Florida found John Crutchley, 55, in his cell on Saturday with a plastic bag over his head. Doctors were unable to revive him and he died of asphyxiation, state corrections officials said.

Crutchley kidnapped a 19-year-old hitchhiker in 1985 and raped her repeatedly. He tied her to his kitchen counter and used needles and tubing to drain her blood into a jar, then drank from it.

She escaped through a bathroom window, handcuffed and naked, and was hospitalized for the loss of about half of her blood.

Crutchley pleaded guilty to kidnapping and sexual battery. He was released to a halfway house in Orlando in 1996 after serving 10 years of his 25-year prison sentence, prompting an uproar among residents who did not want him in the community.

He was sent back to prison one day later when a drug test showed he had used marijuana. Crutchley admitted he had smoked it during a going-away party in prison the night before his release. He was sent back to prison for life for violating parole.
