Blade Blade

Publisher: Activision
Developer: Hammerhead
Release: 11/24/2000
Genre: Adventure
Players:
Difficulty: Hard
ESRB Rating: M

You play as the game's namesake, a human born with the powers of a vampire without the weaknesses or the need to drink blood. You and your partner Whistler have vowed to destroy the vampire menace, one at a time if necessary (and of course it is necessary). To aid you in doing so, you have an impressive arsenal with which to deal with the zombies, vampires, and possessed humans that oppose you. Besides your fists, you have a samurai sword, a handgun, a shotgun, a grenade launcher, and a machine gun. Some of these work better against certain enemies than others.

Bloody Bride Bloody Bride (Import)

Publisher: Atlus Co.
Developer: Atlus Co.
Release: 01/31/1997
Genre: Role-Playing
Players: -
Difficulty: Easy
ESRB Rating: -

Bloody Bride is more action-oriented than most social interaction games, which isn’t saying much. You assume the role of the last vampire prince and must find a bride among the girls you go to high school with. As the action opens, you’re a geek and few people want to be your friend. To win your bloody bride and consummate your nefarious nuptials, you must call upon the advice of female vampire friends and prowl the streets at night to maintain your strength. You can also "train" to improve your charisma, appearance, and so on - not to mention enhance your image by buying clothes.

Castlevania: Symphony of the Night Castlevania: Symphony of the Night

Publisher: Konami
Developer: Konami
Release: 09/30/1997
Genre: Action
Players: -
Difficulty: Medium
ESRB Rating: T

Symphony takes place four years after Dracula X, a PC Engine title in Japan that never saw a US release. Unlike most previous Castlevania games, Symphony features a main character who isn't one of the whip-cracking Belmonts. Stranger still, it turns out that our hero, Adrian Fahrenheit (aka Alucard), is actually a son of Dracula. Your task is to explore Dracula's castle (rumored to only appear once a century) and find out why Richter Belmont, the hero of the first game (and descendant of the original Castlevania hero, Simon), has mysteriously vanished. Oh, and you've also got to kill quite a few monsters along the way.

Countdown Vampires Countdown Vampires

Publisher: Bandai
Developer: Bandai
Release: 08/22/2000
Genre: Adventure
Players: 1 to 2
Difficulty: Easy
ESRB Rating: M

Since Capcom has a lock on the zombie survival horror market, Bandai has turned to another staple of classic horror - vampires (which is hopefully obvious from the title). The story goes that Keith, the main character, is a Las Vegas security guard faced with a sudden inexplicable army of vampires. His quest is a simple one - save the remaining human populace from being added to the undead menagerie, find a way to change the existing vampires back to human form, and try not to die in the process. Countdown Vampires uses a control and inventory scheme that is essentially lifted straight from Resident Evil, thus a fan of that series would theoretically find plenty to like about Countdown Vampires.

DarkStalkers 3: Vampire Savior Darkstalkers 3: Vampire Savior

Publisher: Capcom
Developer: Capcom
Release: 11/30/1998
Genre: Action
Players: -
Difficulty: Easy
ESRB Rating: T

Up to this point, Capcom's Darkstalkers has essentially been "Street Fighter with monsters." At its core, Darkstalkers 3 is still just that, but it has a few twists that manage to make it feel quite a bit different. Instead of going by a best-two-out-of-three-round system, DS3 takes the Killer Instinct approach, where each character has two life bars. When one is drained, the character falls down, refills, and the match continues. Another new twist is the Dark Force power-up, which takes one level of your super meter and acts a bit like the gems did in Marvel Super Heroes.

Dracula: The Resurrection Dracula - The Resurrection

Publisher: DREAMCATCHER

The game commences 7 years after the book ends. Married to Mina and comfortably living in London, Jonathan thinks the nightmare is behind them until one day he return home to a letter. Mina has written that she has gone to Transylvania, finally unable to ignore the call of her blood. Jonathan follows quickly and discovers he has very little time to find Mina before it is too late. For you see, Dracula has returned...

Publisher: Activision
Developer: Silicon Knights
Release: 10/31/1996
Genre: Role-Playing
Players: -
Difficulty: Hard
ESRB Rating: -

With the look and feel of a cross between the Legend of Zelda and Castlevania, Blood Omen: Legacy of Kain unleashes the darker side of the Playstation. Your character (Kain) is murdered at the beginning of the game, then resurrected in the form of a vampire so that he can exact revenge upon those who have wronged him. As you will quickly discover, revenge is a dish best served at body temperature.

Castlevania Castlevania

Publisher: Konami
Developer: Konami
Release: 12/31/1998
Genre: Adventure
Players: -
Difficulty: Medium
ESRB Rating: T

Castlevania lets you take the role of either Reinhardt Schneider, the latest whip-toting member of the Belmont clan (don't ask us why he's got a different last name), or Carrie Fernandez, a young girl with magical powers and a grudge. Both characters have their own separate (though similar) storylines, complete with entirely different endings and a couple of stages that are exclusive to each other's quests. Interestingly enough (to hard-core Castlevania fans, anyway), Carrie is a descendant of Sypha Belnades, the 15th century mage from Castlevania III. Unfortunately, Konami didn't bother to keep Carrie's and Sypha's last names consistent in the translation, thus ruining an otherwise interesting plot point of the game.

Castlevania: Legacy of Darkness Castlevania: Legacy of Darkness

Publisher: Konami
Developer: Konami
Release: 11/30/1999
Genre: Adventure
Players: -
Difficulty: Medium
ESRB Rating: T

Castlevania: Legacy of Darkness is what Konami's first Nintendo 64 Castlevania title was meant to be when it was released early this year. Everything from Castlevania 64 is present here in an enhanced director's cut version, which contains improved graphics, sound, and two extra scenarios featuring the new characters, Cornell the werewolf and the young warrior Henry. Like the original, Castlevania: Legacy of Darkness isn't very similar to Symphony of the Night on the PlayStation but is a hard-core version of the early titles in the series set in 3D. Taking place eight years before the first N64 game, C:LOD begins with Cornell journeying to Transylvania after his friend Ortega had betrayed him, allowing Cornell's sister Ada to be abducted by Count Dracula. Now it's up to you to rescue her, or die trying.

Vampire Savior is the third game in Capcom's Darkstalkers series, which up until this point has essentially been "Street Fighter with monsters." Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver

Publisher: Eidos Interactive
Developer: Crystal Dynamics
Release: 12/31/1999
Genre: Adventure
Players: -
Difficulty: Medium
ESRB Rating: M

Crystal Dynamics' sequel to the first Kain game, Blood Omen: Legacy of Kain, is a far different animal from its predecessor. Instead of being a top-down RPG, Soul Reaver is a 3D adventure game similar to Eidos' Tomb Raider. And Kain? This time he's the main antagonist.
The game begins hundreds of years after Blood Omen and works on the premise that when you, as Kain, were given the choice of sacrificing yourself to save the world of Nosgoth or ruling it, you chose the latter, plunging the world into darkness. Over the millennia, Kain and his vampiric lieutenants evolved new abilities, with Kain always developing them first and the others soon following. When Raziel, the "hero" of the new game, grew wings before his leader did, Kain saw it as blasphemy, tore them from Raziel's back, and cast him into a giant, swirling, watery grave. After his features have been almost completely eaten away by the water, Raziel is saved by a being known as the Elder God, who sets him on a quest to free the world from the parasitic influence of the vampire clans and to destroy Kain. Raziel finds himself transformed so that he no longer drinks blood but devours souls (luckily, since he no longer has a jaw). Also, he can no longer die; instead, he is transported to the Spirit Realm - a shadowy distorted version of the Material World - after sustaining heavy damage. And surprisingly, his wings still work after a fashion, at least letting him glide for short distances.

Vampire Chronicles Vampire Chronicles

Publisher: Capcom
Developer: Capcom
Released: 08/10/2000
Genre: Action
Players: -
Difficulty: Medium
ESRB Rating: -

Vampire Chronicles combines features from every installment of DarkStalkers (including Vampire Hunter 2 and Dark Savior 2, neither of which saw a stateside release) into one rich package, featuring a plethora of fighting modes, a horde of playable characters, and all the requisite modes. Essentially, the game is built around Street Fighter mechanics, with the appropriate button layout and supercombo systems. The game allows you to choose which combo system you want to use (Vampire mode, Hunter mode, and Savior mode, after the series' titles), which affect how the power gauge, supercombos, and life bar behave.
