A great read and my favorite in the whole series. "Old Friend of the Family" is set in modern Chicago and the descendants of Mina Harker.

A traditional vampire novel often has the villain living on the outside of society while being forced to find its victims in secrecy. However, CARRION COMFORT is not a traditional vampire novel. Here we have a rather motley crew (a former SS officer, a corrupt FBI agent, and two Southern debutantes to name just a few) who are able to take victims whenever they feel like it. These are vampires who feed on acts of violence they cause innocent people to inflict upon other innocent people. The more carnage that results from one or more of these acts, the more powerful that vampire becomes. And what makes these vampires really dangerous is how they have occupied places of high status. However, there are a few normal humans who catch on to what is happening. But before he dies Edmund entrusts his secrets to his son, Noell, who becomes a fugitive, living in fear of sharing his father's gruesome fate. Noell's adventures take him to Africa, where vampires are revered as holy men. A naive young Englishman travels to Transylvania to do business with a client, Count Dracula. After showing his true and terrifying colors, Dracula boards a ship for England in search of new, fresh blood. Unexplained disasters begin to occur in the streets of London before the mystery and the evil doer are finally put to rest. Told in a series of news reports from eyewitness observers to writers of personal diaries, this has a ring of believability that counterbalances nicely with Dracula's too-macabre-to-be-true exploits.
