MONTREAL, Canada: 1968, victim one - 21-year-old schoolteacher Norma Vaillancourt. She was strangled, violently raped, had her breasts torn and bitten, yet she had a relaxed, serene, even pleased expression on her face. Victim two - Shirley Audette, found on an apartment patio, raped and strangled, with matching teethmarks. It was 1969. There was no evidence of resistance, no skin under her nails to suggest she fought off her attacker. Neither victim was drugged or drunk at the time of death.
November 1969 - Victim three - Marielle Archambault, a jewelry clerk was met at closing time by a well-dressed young man named "Bill." When she didn't show up for work the next day, her landlady was called and discovered Marielle on the living room floor under a blanket. Her killer had ripped off her clothes, raped her, and let his toothy calling card. But Marielle fought, violently, before she died. The police found a crumpled photograph of "Bill," but the published police sketch came up empty.
Victim four - January 1970, Jean Way, 24, was discovered by her boyfriend nude on her couch with her breasts chewed. Again, no struggle and a satisfied expression on the corpse. Change of scenery: Calgary, May 1971 - victim five. Elizabeth Anne Porteous, a high school teacher fought him desperately. Police found a cuff link under Elizabeth's raped and mutilated body. Fellow teachers had seen her the night before riding in a blue Mercedes with a beef advertisement sticker on the rear window. The description fit the killer from Montreal. When the car was spotted again in the same neighborhood, the Mounties arrested their man. He looked like the man in the photograph, and he admitted the cuff link was his, but said she was alive when he dropped her off.
Unfortunately, the case against Wayne Boden, otherwise known as "Bill," was mostly circumstantial. It took the efforts of a first rate dentist to put the lid on the case. He matched the teeth marks on the victims with Boden's and the verdict was sealed. And, police learned, the actual killings were just a accidental side effect of Boden's sexual frenzy. While he fed off their breasts, he gripped their necks, holding them without struggle until unconsciousness set in, and they died.
