Bloodplay Awareness Campaign Vampirism as Addiction?
Tuesday, 18 August 1998

The subject of vampirism is a diverse and interesting one, and one which has intrigued me for many years. The reason that I was originally interested in (you could even say obsessed with) vampires is for the supposed supernatural powers. The reason for this is simple. It is a part of the human psyche (insert an aggrave accent if you must) to wish for more than we have. Greed is one of the most powerful driving forces for humans, and the hunger for power can be put on parallel lines with a vampires hunger for blood (I know its a crap analogy, but I'm desperately trying to stay on-topic here). A vampire will taste blood, and after that initial taste, they slowly begin to crave more. It is much the same way as being a power-hungry mortal. Slowly the obsession and compulsion for more becomes a craving so intense that you will stop at nothing to gain it (power or blood). Sorry, digressing way to much, shouldn't really talk about the terrible thing known as the Human Condition here.

But anyway, my obsession with vampires has grown, bloomed, spiralled out of all control with the advent of net access. I can now reach out to vampires and attempt to learn more. For me personally, I just seek to gain as much knowledge as possible about everything (greedy little git aren't I?)

Vampirism itself has many components. Now that I have forsaken the idea of supernatural powers (It's not fair. I wanna be superman! ) I can acknowledge many far more interesting things. The most obvious aspect is the blood drinking. I have conversed via the internet with vamps who claim to only need to feed little, up to one vamp that must consume as many as 7 pints per day. But more interesting than this is the question: Why? Is it because the blood is simply high in nutrients and minerals? Surely not, because then everybody would drink it. The taste then? Perhaps part of it, but then surely the hunger would only be on the same level as a normal humans hunger for, say, chocolate. Could it be highly addictive to vamps?

Perhaps this is the answer. Perhaps it is like any other addictive substance. The more you take, the more you want. The more you want, the more you take. A vicious circle phenomenon. Personally I believe that it is the life-force within the blood that the vampires need to survive. I like to use the term Prana (taken from Vyrdolak, the owner of the Real Vampire web site. I have the URL if anyone wants it) because it seems the right one to use. I'm highly spiritualistic, and I believe that it is the blood which carries Prana between the 12 meridian points of energy.
