And she tells him that the girl's pimp is responsible for her death. But when Nick finally gets to confront Mason, he finds Janette bending over his dead body. But she didn't kill him, and that leaves Nick to discover the identity of the real murderer before Janette makes an irrepairable mistake.
Flashback: Janette, in her human life a thousand years before, was a whore. When she befriended another whore who became pregnant, their pimp beat her to death. One night, Janette was assulted by some passing soldiers and ran for help; she was ignored by everyone, including a group of nuns. Only LaCroix came to her rescue. He killed her attacker and offered her a choice, a way out of her current life where she would control her own destiny. She accepted his offer and took great enjoyment in her first kill, the pimp who tormented her.

They let that man go and then proceeded to hunt him down. Nick found him first, and was overcome with hunger. He killed the man, then stayed watching till the man's wife found him.

Synopsis: Nick goes undercover as a member of the Luminology Cult while investigating the murder of another member. When he fails to check in with his friends, Schenke worries that Nick has been sucked into the cult's web for real.
Flashback: Nick was on an archaeological dig with a vampire friend of his. He believed the vampire was his friend and was alos interested in finding their prize - an ancient cure for vampirism. Nick was convinced that they needed the help of a friend of his, an expert in deciphering heiroglyphics. As it turned out, the vampire archaeologist had a bet going with LaCroix, and the whole "cure" had merely been the set up to lure the archaeologist and get Nick.
Father's Day

Flashback: Nick was hanged by a mob who believed he killed a young woman. He was innocent, but he was never given a trial or a chance to defend himself. In retaliation, he killed the two men responsible for the hanging. Only after he sought his vengence did LaCroix make an appearance to let Nick know he'd been responsible for the woman's death.
Bad Blood

Synopsis: A series of horrible murders draws the attention of Liam O'Neal, a Dublin Investigator who was bitten by a vampire as a child and so has an unfailing ability to detect them and their crimes. Once he picks Nick up on his radar, the investigation becomes more trecherous than either thought.
Flashback: London 1888, LaCroix feeds from a local barber, then wants Nick to kill him (LaCroix became ill from ingesting the pure evil of the man) - to make sure he doesn't come back. But Nick cannot take a human life, and leaves him alive. What Nick doesn't realize is that the barber was actually Jack the Ripper and that his evil would grow with each passing year.

Flashback: Vietnam War, Nick was playing doctor in the Red Cross during the war. Nick was present when the particularly vicious group of soldiers massacred a civilian village they were convinced housed a sect of Viet Cong. What Nick didn't know was that LaCroix found a living villager and giving him the opportunity for revenge on the killers, made him a vampire.

Flashback: Nick, Janette, and LaCroix accidentally stumble onto a hiding place used by the Underground Railroad to hide runaway slaves. Nick convinces LaCroix not to kill the man and his son they find hiding there. When the slave hunters showed up, Nick first tried reasoning with them. But, when they decided to set the shack on fire and Nick was forced to face the flames to save the man and his son, one of the slave hunters got what he so richly deserved.
Blood Money

He shouldn't have worried, when he checks with his vampire buddy, botanist, and financial advisor, Nick discovers that his money is gone.

Synopsis: Wealthy Jonathan Levy was murdered. When it was made known that Levy and his wife slept in separate bedrooms, and that Levy was about to change his will, Schenke assumed the wife to be the killer. Unfortunately, he was being influenced by his own marital problems at the time and moved in with Nick. Obviously this arrangement couldn't last long, and Schenke stormed out, heading to - of all places - The Raven. After an interesting chat with Janette, always full of good advice, Scanke realizes the error of his ways. He decides to make up with Myra and has an epiphany - it was the mistress who killed the man, not his wife.
Flashback: Nick and Janette lived as husband and wife for 97 years before Janette began to long for her freedom and a change of scenery. She broke poor Nick's heart, but that didn't stop them from sharing a good bit of snogging down through the years.
Queen of Harps

Synopsis: A cursed harp from Nick's past reappears on an auction block, but Schenke comes in while Nick is attempting to buy it. Since Schenke doesn't know about Nick's fortune, the harp goes to a man named Delabar. When the auctioneer is murdered the police assume that the killer stole the now-missing harp. What they don't know is that Nick, longing for any and all ties to his life before the vampire, stole the harp himself. When a young Welsh woman named Johanna was caught breaking into Delabar's office, she admitted to wanting the harp - to take back to Wales where it belonged. As it turns out, Delabar was the real bad guy. He wanted to destroy the harp and the curse that haunted his family. But in the three-way tug of war, Delabar was killed by a truck and Johanna got the harp. Nick bought it legally and gave it to her to take back.
Flashback: During his still-mortal years, Nick traveled through Wales with a group of knights under the command of a man named Delabar. Nick met a woman named Gwynneth during their travels, who played a harp. Delabar disapproved of Gwynneth's pagan ways and Nick's attraction to her. When Delabar attacked her, she managed to toss the harp into the river, but she was killed, bringing on the curse.
A More Permanent Hell

Flashback: LaCroix, a decorated general in the Roman army, had just returned to his home on Pompeii after a victorious battle against the Gauls. He was both pleased, and somewhat distressed, by the renewed health of his formerly sick daughter. He dismissed his wife's concerns about Divia's pale complexion and new indoor lifestyle. After passing out from too much victory celebrating, he awoke to find Mount Vesuvius erupting and the world in chaos. All except Divia who offered her father a chance to live, as an immortal. And the daughter became mother.

Flashback: Scottsdale, AZ. Nick, the cowboy, was befriended by a man he thought saved his life. But as the night went on, the man tried to poison him with alcohol laced with curare. The poison got him drunk instead of killing him and he passed out. Finally the man revealed himself as a bounty hunter, and for once, LaCroix's timely arrival was good for Nick's state of mind.

Nick decides to try the expariment, but will he make it back?
Flashback: There is a place beyond life - before death - that all living beings go to before they cross over. It is here their souls are weighted to determine what will happen next. Nick must choose whether he will pass on with a human soul or return to life as a vampire.

While interviewing Welsh about Barlow's psychosis, she inadvertantly triggered the vampire-lust Nick struggled so hard against. After a quick visit to Janette, he set about proving Barlow wasn't responsible for all the killings they receintly attributed to him. Was there another murderer on the loose, and would Nick figure it out in time?
Flashback: Nick became obsessed with a volumptous woman who enjoyed his lust as much as he did. He knew his feedings would eventually kill her, but since she didn't seem to care, he didn't think about it too much.
The Black Buddha, Part 1

Synopsis: A mad bomber is setting big bombs off all over the city. One goes off in the plane carrying Schenke and Cohen, killing them and bringing in Vachon, although not exactly in one piece. In comes the brilliantly attrocious Tracy Vetter (and this can't be stressed enough - useless), the daughter of the commissioner. The new Captain Reese gives her to Nick as a new partner, but he's not into this at all. So he turns in his badge only to pick it up again when he finds out the bomber got to his pricinct. Still with us? Right.
Flashback: Nick on the Titanic with a woman named Claire who knows what he is and wants to be one too. Claire had a statue of Buddha which, she told Nick, would grant the owner one wish. But when the ship struck the iceberg, she felt guilty because the Buddha was also cursed and she believed the sinking ship was her fault. So instead of becoming a vampire, she asked Nick to kill her. Since he'd been feeding from her, he decided to do as she asked.

So the Inca went after him, remaining just a step behind for four hundred years.
